The Iowa Waste Reduction Center is partnering with the City of Iowa City to provide a one-day compost operator training in Iowa City. The training will consist of both classroom lectures and hands-on field exercises. Class begins at 8:00 am on June 21 at the Park Lodge at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area in Iowa City. After lunch (included with registration), field exercises will take place at the compost facility at the Iowa City Landfill. Cost is $100 to attend and includes lunch. [Register Today]

The goal of this one-day course is to provide compost operators, equipment operators, and other composting field personnel the basic understanding of how compost manufacturing works, how to anticipate and minimize problems, and what to do when problems occur.

Topics that will be covered include the following:

  • Understanding Compost Pile Management
  • Troubleshooting
  • Stormwater Management
  • Odor Management
  • Pertinent Regulations

This course was developed and will be led by Cary Oshins, Associate Director for the US Composting Council (USCC) and Education Director for the Composting Council Research and Education Foundation (CCREF). Support for the course will be provided by the Iowa Waste Reduction Center, the City of Iowa City, and Barker Lemar Engineering Consultants.

Upon completion of the training, each individual will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Iowa Administrative Rules, Environmental Protection Chapter 567 - 105: Operator Certification for solid waste composting facilities requires certification of permitted compost operators to maintain compliance. This course satisfies this requirement. Permit-by-Rule facilities are also encouraged to attend.
