The Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operations (ISOSWO) Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Subcommittee is hosting a meeting on January 15th from 11AM – 12PM. The purpose of this meeting is to help engage with stakeholders in order to learn more about sustainable practices, programs, and policies that they currently perform and/or believe would be beneficial for Iowa.
This meeting will feature Mr. Kent Holm, Director of Environmental Services for Douglas County, Nebraska as a guest speaker. Kent’s leadership helped get important legislation passed in 2025 concerning lithium-ion batteries and their disposal. Nebraska also has passed legislation regulating the sales of vaping devices, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) intended for recreational use and Kent can speak to those as well.

Kent Holm Bio:
As Director of Environmental Services for Douglas County, Nebraska, Kent administers the County’s solid waste management and environmental compliance. He chairs the Heartland 2050 Regional Planning Initiative’s Natural Resources Committee and the Committee’s Solid Waste Working Group and is a member of the Omaha Climate Action Planning Team. He also serves as Vice President of the Nebraska Chapter of SWANA, also serving as Legislative Advocate. He also participates in the SWANA Core Advocacy Group and Lithium-Ion Battery Work Group, and is a member of the Nebraska Recycling Council’s Advisory Council.
Through Kent’s leadership the Solid Waste Working Group helped get legislation passed in Nebraska concerning lithium-ion batteries and their disposal.
