The Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operations (ISOSWO) Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Subcommittee is hosting a meeting on November 21st from 11AM – 12PM. The purpose of this meeting is to help engage with stakeholders in order to learn more about sustainable practices, programs, and policies that they currently perform and/or believe would be beneficial for Iowa.
This meeting will feature guest speakers from the Illinois Product Stewardship Council (ILPSC), which is seeking to shift the product waste management system in Illinois from one focused on government-funded and ratepayer-financed waste diversion to one that relies on producer responsibility. The speakers will talk about how ILPSC was established, how it functions, and highlight some recent accomplishments.

Marta Keane Bio:
Marta Keane began her environmental career in 1988 in the private sector, changed to the public sector in 1992 where she has excelled at municipal and county positions, working on curbside and drop-off programs, along with writing Solid Waste Plans, and influencing state legislation. For seven years Ms. Keane ran one of the busiest Household Hazardous Waste collection sites in the United States. She offered residents the first mid-west electronic recycling event in 1996. At Will County, she has forged partnerships with municipalities, townships and businesses to create more recycling drop-offs for traditional items, electronic items, medications, batteries, fire extinguishers and more. As part of a team, she worked on the County Energy Plan and created the County’s Green website, offering energy efficiency, water conservation, composting and recycling information to over 40,000 visitors annually. She manages social media education on all Will County Resource Recovery programs.
Over the course of her career, she has served on the Illinois Recycling Association board several times; spent two years on the SWANA-IL board and on several statewide task forces. Currently, Ms. Keane serves on the Recycling Contamination Task Force, the Illinois Electronics Task Force, and the Illinois Statewide Recycling Needs Assessment Advisory Council. She is on the National Recycling Coalition Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the Illinois Product Stewardship Council. She was recently honored with the Steve Apotheker Award, the state’s highest recycling honor. She credits her success to her peers whose passion, creativity and tenacity are a continual source of inspiration.
